Russell has worked in a variety of private architectural practices between 1970 and 1985 before becoming director/partner of an architectural firm. During the years, he has had a wide range of experience on various building types and sizes.

Detailed experience has included high rise home unit developments on the Gold Coast during the early 1980’s to Central Queensland experience on a wide range of building types. Educational facilities are a speciality, with projects including child care centres, primary schools, high schools and university buildings. Technically advanced facilities have included tertiary level research laboratories, a specialist light metals research centre and detail refurbishment of existing University facilities.

Russell maintains a high profile in industry groups being a regional representative for the Australian Institute of Architects, as well as active community service through Rotary and the Salvation Army.

Russell has played a key role in the following educational building design projects which received commendation awards from the Australian Institute of Architects:
• Worley Parsons - Yaamba Road Pedestrian Overpass (footbridge) North Rockhampton
• The Rockhampton Grammar School’s Islay Lee Centre, a new four level learning centre
• Mt Morgan Shire Council - Childcare Centre, QLD
• The Rockhampton Grammar School – Primary School Department Stage 1 works
