Charles Glanville Managing Director (NSW). Sydney.
- Bachelor of Architecture, University of Sydney (1970)
Charles Glanville is one of the leading exponents of education design and in particular school education design in Australia. Charles’ contribution to school education design culminates in 40 years’ experience working with educators to improve the development of teaching and learning. His collaborative design style sees him work closely with educators and project groups to ensure projects are driven by an educational brief. He has a developed aptitude for analysing client needs and translating these into built forms that successfully merge brief, budget and site parameters.
Charles’ professional interest in education has been fostered by an academic interest in the theories and pedagogies of educators. Charles has come to recognise that learning settings are crucial to the successful delivery of teaching and learning strategy. He has presented at a number of conferences here and overseas on the architectural interpretation of different pedagogies.
As Managing Director of Thomson Adsett (NSW) Pty Ltd Charles mentors a large design team with established expertise in the Health, Seniors Living, Commercial and Education sectors. Charles’ own experience with school education encompasses more than 300 projects and the collaborative team effort which has resulted now sees him leading a team also cognisant of the requirements of schools and educators.
One of the most challenging aspects of modern school design is in the redevelopment of older sites to provide facilities, access and all other functional relationships now incorporated in schools on greenfield sites. Charles has significant experience delivering cohesive masterplans to modernise older schools, and is an expert at staging development works to meet schools’ budgetary and operational requirements. Charles has also been lead architect and completed major projects in the tertiary sector, particularly at the University of Western Sydney in the design of many of the initial buildings at the Kingswood and Blacktown campuses plus significant works at other campuses.
Despite the experience of over 300 projects, Charles’ approach to each new project is one without preconceptions of a possible result. His approach is to work closely with a client to understand the essential elements of organisational goals and desires of the educational pedagogy to deliver an appropriate design solution to ensure that student-focused needs are the foremost drivers of design.
